If you’ve always wanted to try quilting but didn’t know where to start, this one-on-one course is just for you!
We’ll work together at your pace, focusing on the basics to get your first quilt project completed. Every session is hands-on, with plenty of time for questions, demos, and conversation. By the end, you’ll have your very own finished project and plenty of confidence in your new quilting skills.
Agenda:
Session 1 – Diving Right In:
Let’s get to know each other! We’ll chat about your experience and mine along with what inspired you to try quilting.
We’ll discuss the history of quilting, look at some styles, and discuss your goals.
We’ll go through the basic tools and fabrics, without getting into complicated jargon, just what you need to know to get started. You’ll have the knowledge to continue on your own for future projects.
We’ll also figure out what you need to setup your own creative space at home.
Session 2 – Fabrics, Colors, and Making Your First Cuts:
This is where the fun really begins! You’ll have the opportunity to select fabric and patterns to use in your first project.
We’ll go through prepping fabric before the project begins. We also look at ironing techniques, measuring and cutting fabric. There’s plenty to learn here! You’ll be surprised at the tips you’ll learn along the way.
We’ll discuss how and where to purchase fabric for quilting. You’ll get an introduction on the most common measurements and math tips to help you.
Learn safe cutting techniques using rotary cutters, cutting mats and rulers.
Session 3 – Planning and Sewing Made Easy
We’ll look at various quilt patterns and talk about identifying the most appropriate options for your skill level for future projects.
You’ll learn to use important tools like irons, clappers, pins, and clips.
We’ll start piecing everything together with sewing machines, after a lesson on this important piece of equipment. You’ll feel more confident purchasing and using your first sewing machine.
Session 4 – Bring Your Quilt Together
You’ll learn about the layers of quilts in what is commonly called the “sandwich”, labeling your quilt, personalization and special touches.
You’ll learn to square up your quilt, finish the edges, and add the binding by machine.
At that point, you’ll have a finished quilt project to enjoy along with all the basics so that you’ll feel confident as a beginning quilter.
You’ll be armed with quality online resources to use for purchasing fabrics, patterns, tools, and machines. You’ll even have a list of channels for reference and inspiration on future projects.
Cost and Expectations
The cost for 4 lessons is $100. That is $25 dollars per lesson expected at the start of each session. The session dates and times are flexible.
I teach beginning quilting lessons using my own equipment. You do not need to bring any equipment or tools.
Since I assume you have no knowledge of quilting as a beginner, I put together a material kit designed for the lessons. This eliminates the problems associated with choosing patterns, fabrics, and notions required before learning about them. You will need to purchase the kit at the first lesson. One kit costs $50.
There won’t be any pressure to buy a sewing machine or fabrics and notions since I do not sell them. The lessons are done in the same style that I use for my own family members who wish to learn quilting.
You’ll be delighted to finish your first project!
